The mountain Hornindalsrokken is situated at the end of a valley branching off to the north from the main valley of Hornindal in Sogn og Fjordane (county), Norway. Its peak marks the border between Sogn og Fjordane and Møre og Romsdal counties, and rises 1529 meters above sea level. Hornindalsrokken and the Geiranger fjord are 15 km (about 10 miles) apart, so the title "Hornindalsrokken, Geiranger Fjord" is somewhat misleading. "Hornindalsrokken, Nordfjord, Norway" would be better. Nordfjord is one of the fjords of Sogn og Fjordane, and it has given name to the district in the northern part of this county. The valley (municipality) Hornindal is then part of the Nordfjord district.

I had a sister-in-law who lived at Sogn og Ford for a while and I recall her telling me that in the winter that valley was so deep that no sun shone there at all, even though it was located south of the area responsible for Norway being called The Land of the Midnight Sun. Also being told that Bergen had a reputation as being very rainy. This was in 1960 when my husband's father was retired from being harbor master for Trondheim and her husband was official architect for Bergen.

www.world-of-waterfalls.com/norway-de-sju-sostre.html The Seven Sisters (De Sju Søstre) is definitely the most famous waterfall in the Geiranger Fjord (Geirangerfjorden). It consists of several columns of water, which is how this waterfall got is name (as someone envisioned there was seven of these columns). Depending on the amount of snowmelt or rain, it's rare that you'll actually see seven waterfalls.

Thanks for the explination Hogheadoriginal I had pulled this one up to try to count the waterfalls and I only see four...was looking for the other three! =)

What strikes me is the lack of trees a hundred years ago, probably due to today's reduced grazing from goats and sheep.

Speaking of goates and sheeps. you are right. The vegitation IS keapt donwn due to farming and animal grazing. This is why Norway has the worlds most beautiful fjords. There are fjords elsewhere too - e.g. in Alaska, but there are few places in the world where vegitation is keapt down by the farming and animal grazing. In fact no other creature would be able to live in the steep, rocky mountains surrounding the fjords i Norway. Where people and animal live, the trees and grass is keapt down. This is what makes the Norwegian fjords uniqe in the world.

By the way: the name fjord or fiord (pronounced /fjɔːd/ or pronounced /fiːɔːd/) has its origin from the norse (ancient norwegian language) word farda, which means to travel or to go (to the other side - accross the fjord).

Hmm, while it looks like the Geiranger-Fjord (Seven Sisters waterfall in the background). Prekestolen is at a different Fjord: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prekestolen

This is definitely the Geiranger fjord, but I think the korrekt name is Preikestolen which means pulpit in english.

Preikestolen is in Lysefjord.

Yes, there is a famous rockformation called Preikestolen in Lysefjord as well, but this one has the same name but is in Geiranger fjord. As mentioned in this link.

I'm guessing it was called Prækestolen at that time.
