Hi, Very interesting to see the 'knifeboard' arrangement for top deck passengers on the trams in both photographs. This arrangement was superceded by the 'Garden Seat' configuration where passengers face forward as in modern day buses etc. I think the change was gradual starting in the late 1870s early 1880s.

Leonard Bentley Thank you so much! Hadn't heard that term before, but will use it as a tag in future, or Garden Seat where applicable. This says that the term was first used in Punch on 15 May 1862...

The rails seem to very wide apart compared with the later electric trams.

blackpoolbeach Much wider! Do you remember this one of the woman dashing across the street at almost exactly the same spot on Patrick Street?

If only they could bring these street lamps back, to replace the current, building site inspired monstrosities.

Quite a rare car. Fiat 850. Next visible is a Triumph Herald or Vitesse. Most likely a Herald. Two BMC 1100 or 1300s. Ford Zephyr or Zodiac Mark III. VW Beetle and then a Mini. From Right of frame. Mercedes Benz Fintail. Probably a W111 220. VW Type 2 Pick-up. Mini, Mark II. Morris Minor 1000, 948cc version. Renault 4. Morris Oxford.

What a fabulous, atmospheric street shot. I must admit I've never heard of a 'book factory' before - I learn something new every day!

Great details!!

Wonderful street photography and captures the essence of the period beautifully! You could spend hours poring over this and admiring the details. The noise level on the street during rush hour must have been considerable with the steel tyres on the wheels and those cobbles to rattle over. "I'd like a room at the back please sir???" Is that a soldier at the rere of the tram? He looks a lot more military than transport company in that uniform, quite smart really.

Swordscookie Staring and staring, but can't make up my mind. Uniform very military-ish, but is he wearing a small satchel-type thingy for the money (under his right hand)?? Need tram company expert, and I bet there's one out there somewhere!
