Hmm -- according to this contemporary news report, there was a huge earthquake in Mexico two days earlier that caused pronounced shocks 2700 miles away in DC, so perhaps that's what this is about.

A big blizzard struck the whole east coast on March 2, 1914. news.google.com/newspapers?id=4rIyAAAAIBAJ&sjid=8lMDA... That's probably what caused the damage.

j3net: I think you are correct that this image shows buildings damaged by the strong winds during the blizzard of March 2, 1914. A Washington Post article of March 3, 1914 describes shattered windows, blown off roofs and other destruction of property. We will add to the record when we update the database.
