proper photography..it is true though that today's snap shots will be tomorrows history..a strange concept that history can be tomorrow but true. The older something gets and the more intangible the time from whence it came becomes the more important, historically and artistically it gets.

Good description of the SPRAY in Newcastle in September 1896 (first Australian port-of-call) - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/14068752 , and an unloved photo in the CCUN photostream -

beachcomber australia It's a great story isn't it? His life reads like a classic boys adventure novel - sharks and all. Did you see he married while in Australia in 1871? (Hence the ladies by the name of 'Walker' who were described as relatives in the first article.) Love that the first article recorded both the boorish behaviour of LADY MANNING's passengers, as well as each round of applause!

Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons I should read his book rather than piece together possibly innaccurate newspaper reports! Are there more SPRAY photos to come?

beachcomber australia Sadly no :( I couldn't find any further images of Slocum or SPRAY - well at least where they are identified. You can find his book online here, complete with oddly robotic audio!
