I gotta say, this photo got me wondering ... is golf enough of a "sure thing" that the only way to gamble is on buying golf balls? ;) Turns out, (thanks to Google) this is a 1938 Mills Golf Ball Slot Machine - 25¢ made by Mills Novelty Co. during the late 1930's and early 1940's. Sold directly to upper end golf courses, these machines would payout in golf balls rather than money. Mills modified the cabinet of one of their existing slot machines to hold golf balls and dispense them at the bottom. With the use of an electric motor, the appropriate number of golf balls would come out on winning plays. It has a wood cabinet with hand painted green trim. —Nation's Attic

Indeed it is. I was interested too and just found a little news article on Trove about golf balls and a slot machine with fifteen pounds cash being stolen from a Melbourne golf club in 1939... nla.gov.au/nla.news-article11238607 I suppose it was a novel way to lose a bit of money!! EG

Now this is something I'd like to see in the US. A warm sausage machine.

Very interesting, Ahrberg was a major player in the market until the 80's in Hannover. But I never heard of this machine. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritz_Ahrberg Maybe the picture was taken at central station or the "Markthalle". Old pictures of Markthalle show a similar roof : de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Datei:Hannover_Marktha... More about Markthalle: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Markthalle_Hannover
