Perhaps somewhere near the Baltic coast, judging by the stepped gable facades typical of North Germany?

Try pod, you sure have a point there! Stepped gables are common in several countries in northern Europe as well as around the Baltic sea - in Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden, to mention some where Carl Curman travelled. I reckon this could indeed be a useful clue in identifying the location of the photo :) /Anna B.

The key for identification should be the silhouette of a church at the end of the street. It's tower shows a massive building with a slighter bit above.

Maybe this could be Wiesbaden (Rheinstraße/Wilhelmstraße) at 1900? I can see some typical historimus-buildings an other elements. But this is just a spontaneous tip ...
