NYT of October 21, 1913 reports: "Leipzic, Oct 20. Eight lions and a tiger escaped from a circus van here at midnight last night, and for four hours the wildest excitement and terror prevailed in the middle of the city." query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9C00E0DB113CE633A... Six lions and the tiger were killed. Two lions were captured alive.
