    Although the spelling varied at first, the name became Princes Street.

    The street was never known as Princess Street and would only ever have been written that way in error (a common and easy mistake right enough). It was named after the sons of George III, the British monarch at the time of the New Town's construction in the 1760s. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Town,_Edinburgh

    Charlotte Harriet Jane Lockhart, daughter of Sophia Scott and John Gibson Lockhart, wife of James Robert Hope (m. 1847). Her husband changed the family name to Hope-Scott in recognition of her famous maternal ancestor. James Robert Hope-Scott's memoirs are on Googlebooks; Chapter XXIII covers the years from their marriage to her death in 1858, along with the deaths of her two youngest children in the weeks following. She was about 31. She was buried with little Margaret and Walter in a vault at St. Margaret's convent, Edinburgh. books.google.com/books?id=YzNKAAAAMAAJ
