    If only this spacious elegance was still there! Also noticeable in these old photographs is the lack of street furniture and signage that blights modern photography of street scenes in our towns and cities.

    There is a definite sense of newness and pride, even with a little horse-poo evident to the right. ;)

    Simply amazing! I'd love so much to go for a walk up 1858 princes street with no crowds, shops, buses or people with clip boards looking money. It makes me sad that all this character has been paved over and commercialised, the only way the city would survive though. I'd rather dodge the odd pile of horse poo than pushy charity workers ;-)
