Rosebery tram in crowded street, corner Pitt and Market Streets Sydney, ca. 1937

What is missing is the reason for the crowd. Wouldn't Westfield who now occupy the whole block at the right of this photo be dreaming of enjoying the trade of such numbers of potential customers now?

Wonderful image of old Sydney, the Pitt St frontage of Farmers department store on left, sign to Anthony Horderns George St store through the Strand Arcade and Prouds jewellers further down. Although the awning sign says Gilbert & Sullivan, I see Kirsova was dancing with the Russian Ballet at the Theatre Royal in 1937, the performance may have just finished, it had seating for 1200. The pedestrians obviously have no fear of trams. SHOW NEWS (1937, January 4). The Daily Telegraph (Sydney, NSW : 1931 - 1954), p. 4.
