Beautiful image. I'm curious if Ruth St. Denis is wearing a body suit here or whether this is an airbrushed studio shot, and whether she ever publicly performed with this costuming? Anyone know? I'm recalling from Martha Graham's biography (she started out as a Denishawn dancer) the anecdote where Graham was performing exotic dance numbers during a touring vaudeville show which was raided in Chicago--the policemen were checking the costumes very closely for being too revealing and one of the showgirls pointed towards Martha and said what about her? And the policeman replied, "That's OK. She's Art!"

Read a short 1915 Vanity Fair magazine article about Ruth St. Denis here: oldmagazinearticles.com/articles.php?cid=201 -it has great pictures of her dance school (can you say "early hippies"?)
