Thorpe [and] McGloughlin (LOC)

See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Thorpe for more about Jim Thorpe, who won two gold medals at the 1912 Olympics (pentathlon & decathlon), but had to return the medals when it was discovered that he had played baseball for pay, and was therefore not an amateur. He later played both baseball and football professionally. This may have been in May 1912, at US tryouts for the pentathlon. See NYT for May 19, 1912 [ query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9801EFDC1E3CE633A... ] The title given to the picture matches neither the spelling on the slide for McLoughlin nor the spelling used by the NYT, McLaughlin.

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Retro Athlete, and we'd love to have this added to the group!

McLoughlin's t-shirt rocks! No wonder he's ahead. (cue Chariots of Fire by Vangelis.)

This photo appears to have been taken at Celtic park in Queens, NY - the house in the background is fairly distinctive and appears in other Celtic Park photos. Thorpe competed against McLaughlin at the Pentathlon Trials on May 18, 1912 at Celtic Park. This appears to be the 1500 meters race, where McLaughlin nipped Thorpe 4:49 to 4:49 4/5. (This according to a NY Times article of the period.) - Wayne Baker

Wayne F. Baker: Thanks for the information on Celtic Park. The image does seem to show athletes Thorpe and McLaughlin at Celtic Park. This website (which uses the above photo) has an interesting history of the sports park which was located in Queens: wingedfist.org/Celtic_Park_History.html . We will add more information to our description when we update.
