Robt. K. Groogh (LOC)

LOC -- Your title misspells his last name. "Gooch," not "Groogh."

And yet, this fellow with the big V on his football uniform (in a portrait taken in Charlottesville, Va.) would seem to be Robert K. Gooch, a football quarterback hero who led the University of Virginia team to shutout seasons in 1914 and 1915. Much later, as a PoliSci professor, he advocated for the abolition of football scholarships, according to this source: books.google.com/books?id=sT7EMa71OD4C&pg=PA119&l... A biographical sketch: "The Robert Kent Gooch Professorship in Government and Foreign Affairs was funded by friends of the chair’s namesake. A Rhodes Scholar, Robert Gooch (College ’14, Graduate Arts & Sciences ’15) joined the faculty in 1924. He retired four decades later, having been chair of the Department of Government and Foreign Affairs, director of the Institute of Public Affairs, head of the Honors Program, University marshal, and dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. An authority on comparative government and European parliamentary government, Mr. Gooch advised President Franklin Roosevelt during World War II. He died in 1982." im.dev.virginia.edu/endowments/professorships/long_name/c... A November, 1914 account of the Virginia/North Carolina Game, in which Gooch played: select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F20612F83C5C1373...

This was taken in Trafalgar Square probably just in front of the South African Embassy (South Africa House). The building in the upper right is still standing. The Strand would be immediately to the left and Whitehall behind the approaching (No 8?) bus. Here is a shot of South Africa House in the 1920s
