A similar photo is in www.usgennet.org/usa/topic/preservation/dav1/pg231.htm with the caption: "To reach Archangel, ships had to go 350 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Navigation was open only a few months. The steamer Seattle is rushing to unload her cargo, on Oct. 21, 1918, before the ice blocks her passage home." I don't think that this is the USS Seattle (1916-1946) - the former USS Washington - it looks quite different (and she brought back "doughboys" from France at that time, s. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Washington_(ACR-11)). The Seattle star., January 12, 1918, Image 8, col. 2 reported that a steamer called Seattle was launched, it's probably this ship, s. chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn87093407/1918-01-12/ed-... S. also The Knoxville independent., June 15, 1918, p. 5. last col.: "The Skinner & Eddy Shipbuilding corporation of Seattle, Wash., launched the steamship Seattle last January, 146 days after her keel had been laid." chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn85042907/1918-06-15/ed-...

The ship has dazzle camouflage. Leslie's Photographic Review of the Great War books.google.com/books?id=ep1GAQAAMAAJ&pg=RA1-PT74 has more photos of this forgotten episode of history, including one of an un-named ship in dazzle camouflage.

At the left, as on several other photos, someone lined through "WASHINGTON" and wrote "SEATTLE."
