  i totally agree with Amy! i walk down along here on my way to work each day - the buildings are the same so it still looks pretty much the same but with people instead of cars. i wish the original streetlamps were still there.

  May I suggest an alternative explantion to your description of the content of this image?
  Looking over the side of the rail on the left there are buildings, suggesting that this image was taken whilst the ship was berthed. The large structure on the right appears to be a ventilator, probably from the ship's engine room, suggesting that this was not a sailing ship. The ropes that they are hauling on may have been to do with unloading the cargo from the hold of the ship.
