How nice it would be if it still looked like this! No fast food stores, no luxury apartments, no carpark....

Could this be a group of orphan children at the beach on a Sunday, or a field trip of school or church children? They don't seem to be with their separate families - One can see a few adults in the background standing guard, watching. Only one child is completely bare standing at the edge of the waves, another in underwear. I get the feeling they aren't even with this group of children at all. Very few seem to be taking advantage of the ocean. Most all of the children (students ?) are wearing full public dress. Girls are wearing standard white dresses, some with smock aprons, hats, stockings and shoes are on. Boys in full dress and hats as well. Where are their bathing costumes? This group seem to be observing the water rather than enjoying it for seaside activities, early 1900s to 1910s...

I can see why he stole some shirts! Poor thing's coat is horribly ragged- I can just imagine what his shirt looked like!

When I saw your pictures (this one plus the others), it brought tears to my eyes. My grandfather pass away 25 years ago, and he was a cane sugar worker in Las Piedras area. I never got to see pictures of him at work, and if it was not for you I would probably never knew. Thanks soooo much for posting this pictures it meant a lot to me !!!

Don O'Neill- Great!!! My father would travel for miles to deliver his fathers lunch to him in exactly the same way using these containers. It was in the 1930's as well. A quite man who spoke very little so my grandmother developed a routine to figure out where he was working each day before sending my father on this errand by checking the shed to see which tools he had taken with him that day. My grandfather was a laborer or "Journalero" in the fincas de tobacco y fruta etc. He worked and lived in the Rio Piedras area and lived in the Guaynabo Barrios of Rio, Hato Nuevo, and Capetillio over the years.
