POINT OF INFORMATION On Wednesday 31st January 2018 the NLI Flickr Photostream with all the research and information gathered will be archived. The Irish Web has been archived by the NLI over the past several years and this has led to the archiving of the photostream. Carol has been linking the information gathered on each shot to the catalogue and now the archiving will ensure that it is preserved for future reference for those who may wish to research!

"An oast, oast house or hop kiln is a building designed for kilning (drying) hops as part of the brewing process. They can be found in most hop-growing (and former hop-growing) areas and are often good examples of vernacular architecture. ... They consist of a rectangular one or two storey building (the "stowage") and one or more kilns in which the hops were spread out to be dried by hot air rising from a wood or charcoal-fired below. The drying floors were thin and perforated to permit the heat to pass through and escape through a cowl in the roof which turned with the wind. C. 1910: I hadn't realised the defilement of our built heritage with pebbledash had set in that long ago.

Signs on doorway to left of car read BSA Bicycles.
According to Wikipedia, BSA made bicycles from 1880 to 1887, and then again from 1908 onwards. So given the car there, this would be after 1908.

Question please: why the writing at the bottom is reversed?

TJ It's a glass plate negative. If you look at any of our Lawrence photos (or images from many of our other collections), you'll see the same thing...

The establishment on the right looks like H C Perry & Son, but amongst those present at the 1896 Licensed Grocers and Vintners' Association's Annual Meeting (as reported in Freeman's) were "Edrwd Irwin Campbell, R Crawford (R Perry & Son, Rathdowney)" [edit] Must be different Perry - in 1878 Mr. Robinson Perry of Rathdowney was described in the Belfast News-letter as Secretary of the Provincial Brewers Association.

Raglan Cycles: 1896 The company was registered on 4 December, to take over the businesses of Taylor, Cooper and Bednell and the Anti-Friction Ball Co

They built a 2hp motorcycle and forecar from 1902-1903, yet ultimately concentrated on cycle production throughout which lasted until around 1906. So you've got a date range of 1896 - 1906 (plus however long it takes to remove a sign - 20 years?).
