"The paddle punt Warrane was built in 1883 and had an open wheelhouse. She was rated as being able to carry fourteen vehicles and up to 109 passengers." (ref. PIctorial History of Ferries, Graeme Andrews, Reed 1982). Coincidentally Harold Cazneaux photographed the same (altered) ferry ca. 1920 - nla.gov.au/nla.pic-an2345949 - used as an illustration in the above book. Another later picture and more information: www.ferriesofsydney.com/warrane.html

The horse ferry used to operate between Milsons Point and the west side of Fort Macquarie (Bennelong Point), from where this photo was taken. See this 1895 map of Sydney - www.nla.gov.au/apps/cdview?pi=nla.map-rm3443-sd&rgn=0...

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/51979177@N02] Here is a test for you. Is this photo the interior of the Dawes Point Baths (see note) or somewhere else; if so where?

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/51979177@N02] It seems the old workhorse 'Warrane' was an object of affection. Did a bit of Troving - there's a half-scale "builders model" at the Powerhouse Museum dated 1882 - from.ph/211568
