  Ignacy Jan Padereski, Polish composer and diplomat; his wikipedia entry: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ignacy_Jan_Paderewski That must be his second wife (the first died in 1881); her name was Helena Paderewska, before that Helena Górska, Baroness de Rosen. The couple came to the US to build support for Polish independence, and to give fundraising concerts. Helena died in Switzerland in 1974.

  This is likely from April 15, 1915 "Ignace Jan Paderewski, the Polish pianist, arrived yesterday from London on the White Star liner Adriatic on his way to San Francisco to ask President Charles C. Moore of the Panama-Pacific Exposition to give one day for the benefit of the 10,000,000 homeless people in Poland who are facing death by starvation. Polish peasant refugees (LOC)

  Question please: if I remember correctly, Poland was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire during the WWI. I wonder from what these peasant are escaping? Russians? I think it was a stalemate on the Eastern front as it was in the west. Germans? They were allied to Austria. Any info?

  You are wrong T.J In period 1795-1918 Poland was under Russian,Prussian and Austro-Hungarian occupation .

  My guess is they were escaping from anyone who was shooting. The peasants didn't really have a 'side' just wanted to be left alone to try and work the farm and have shelter and food.
