Funnily enough, one of the men in this photo may be my grandfather Edward Charles Haswell who, in that year, left in one of the vehicles for Springsure to start the Ambulance station in that town. My mother was born there in 1923.

Since the establishment of the City Ambulance Transport Brigade (CATB) on 12 September 1892, the original intent has prevailed through time and that is providing care and support to the sick and injured in the Queensland community. By 1902 Queensland had transitioned from a colony to a state and the ambulance brigade had spread to a number of Queensland communities to become the Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade (QATB). Each local center was administered by a QATB committee in conjunction with the State Council. Dad ("Harry" Drew) remembers Shorncliffe State School pupils being given a half-day holiday so that they could disperse to local vantage points to watch Bert Hinkler fly in towards Eagle Farm. The place he and his younger brother stood to watch was a vacant block on the corner of Raymond Street and Wharf Street, Shorncliffe. (The spot is now occupied by that younger brother's swimming pool.) Dad would have been going on 7 years of age and in Grade 2 at the time.

I wonder what it would take to deserve another half-day holiday, these days? Dad's recollection (81 years on, and a bit hazy) is that the plane flew almost directly overhead, so it would seem that Hinkler was following the coast and would have come in fairly low over Brighton, Sandgate, Shorncliffe, Nudgee Beach and Cribb Island before landing.

"In the late nineteenth century, French journalist Henri Gilbert set out to walk around the world. When Gilbert came to Australia he crossed the continent from Perth to Brisbane. He traveled on foot across the Nullarbor Plain, an arduous leg of the journey, taking some five and a half months. Gilbert kept a diary of the crossing in his meticulously tidy hand. That 173-page diary is a treasure that, by chance, was uncovered by Colin Dyer when he was browsing in the John Oxley Library in Brisbane." "The diary includes photographs of Gilbert himself and the people he met on his way, as well as cuttings about his journey from the local newspapers of the time.
