His birth was registered during the first quarter of 1897 at Macclesfield, Cheshire. He was born at Chelford, the son of Noel and Lilian Lee. The 1901 census puts him at Nether Alderley, Cheshire, near Macclesfield. He is aged 4 at the time, with his father Noel (33) a cotton manufaction merchant born at Bowden, Cheshire. His mother Lilian (32) was born at Newton Ferry in Wiltshire. His sister Josephine E, aged 3 also appears on the census form.

this doctor was the kind of man that gave troops hope and confidence that they would be looked after -- a tradition that continues to this day.

Not only was Noel Godfrey Chavasse a true hero in the real sense of the word for the work he did for the medical team of the 10th Battalion (Liverpool Scottish) but it is worth pointing out that he won his TWO VC's without firing a shot.

There is a book about him titled "Chavasse Double VC" by Ann Clayton published by Leo Cooper.

Noel Chavasse attended Liverpool College, the school that both my children have attended. There is a portrait of him in the school library and a bust of him in the chapel. The school's Combined Cadet Force has a Chavasse Platoon named after him. His bravery is also commemorated as the centrepiece of a memorial to Victoria Cross winners in Liverpool University's Abercromby Square. His brother Aidan's name is on the panels dedicated to the missing of the King's (Liverpool) Regiment on the Menin Gate.
