A.k.a. Oslo (Oslo was called Christiania until ~1920)

Quite fascinating. Was this re-coloured, or this actually a colour photo from 1890?

Fascinating! The water basin providing foreground interest here was a water reservoir for Oslo (Christiania) in this time. Placed on the highest point in the area, it served water to the surrounding areas of the town.
The photo above must have been taken from the tower of the house of the keeper of the water basin, now simply known as Tårnhuset (The Tower House). Its a kindergarten now.
Here's an image of the house the photo was shot from, with the water reservoir (now just a fountain during summertime) in the foreground:

GerryGray: Go to the set this came from for more info, but generally its an ink-coloured photo.

Trond, what's the view like from that spot today? Do you have a shot that compares?

This is from Grefsen in 2007, which is way higher, but still gives an impression of roughly the same view, only from a bit further away: [http://www.flickr.com/photos/gerrygray/478214500/]
