    I really like your collection of old photos! Fascinating indeed. There's no cathedral in this photo btw. The building to the right is known as the nieuwe kerk, i.e. the new church and although it's an impressive building, it's not a cathedral. As far as I know there has never been a catholic cathedral in Amsterdam; the see of the diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam is located in the city of Haarlem.

    Correct description is "Dam Square" (The caption in the print itself is "Amsterdam Dam"). the church on the left is "Nieuwe Kerk", not Cathedral. (Amsterdam has no cathedral.) See also the comment here:

    This is indeed Dam Square. The statue on the Dam Square, torn down in 1914, was popularly referred to as Naatje van de Dam: nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naatje_van_de_Dam
