Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich of Russia (Russian: Михаил Михайлович; 16 October 1861 – 26 April 1929) was a son of Grand Duke Michael Nicolaievich of Russia and a first cousin of Alexander III of Russia. He followed a military career, but was banished from living in Russia when in 1891 he contracted a morganatic marriage with Countess Sophie of Merenberg. He spent the rest of his life living in exile in England and in the French Riviera, escaping the Russian Revolution. His two daughters married within the British aristocracy. Countess Sophie of Merenberg, Countess de Torby, (1 June 1868 – 14 September 1927) was the eldest daughter of Prince Nikolaus Wilhelm of Nassau and Natalya Alexandrovna Pushkina. Note the spelling "Torby". Their daughters Nada & Zia:

He has been an exile from Russia be cause of his marriage. Like many of the Russian Grand Dukes, he found someone outside the court circle to love, and he married her. Such things are not unknown In other countries, but nowhere are they visited with such strict punishment as In Russia. The Grand Duke was practically banished. This was small punishment for him. The Russian Grand Dukes have always looked for their amusement in Paris rather than in St. Petersburg. The Grand Duke Michael, since his exile, has established a home in England and he spends much of his time In Paris and on the Riveria.
