I love this one, such a tranquil scene and so very atmospheric. The two waiting to go out fishing, the long well constructed rowing boats their rowlocks standing out clearly and refelectd in the still water, the little steam pinnace all covered up for the weather and the clarity of the whole thing? This is outstanding! I was wondering if the shade above the stack on the steam boat was early smoke but it is in fact nicely situated weed in the background! Another beauty NLI, so very well chosen to begin our day with!

I wonder if this could be Gerhart Johan Robert Hauptmann (1862-1946), German playwright, poet and novelist, and Nobel Laureate in Literature for 1912?

It could be a photo at a younger, slimmer time than nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/literature/laureates/1912/hau... or www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/257058/Gerhart-Hauptmann Gerhart Hauptmann was 50 when he got the Nobel in 1912. Does this photo seems a little younger than that? Perhaps it was a studio portrait used for publicity.

He looks like Gerhart Hauptmann, if you compare this photo to the images on Wikimedia. The first one there seams to be a copy of this photo.

I agree that the Wikimedia collection of images does support this identification. The source for the Wikimedia copy of this picture appears to be a 1905 Polish book of Polish literature. So that would account for the fact that he looks younger than 50 in this photo -- he was no older than 43. The book is by Wilhelm Feldman (1868-1919), '''Współczesna literatura polska'' (Contemporary Polish literature, 1905). LoC has a later edition at lccn.loc.gov/76525697.
