Maria Goeppert Mayer was honored in the third volume of the American Scientists collection of US postage stamps, in June, 2011. The stamp is one in a series that honors Americans who have made extraordinary contributions to science. Mayer was one of only two women to ever win the Nobel Prize in physics—the other was Marie Curie.

The stamp combines images from the University of California San Diego’s Mandeville Special Collections Library, and includes photographs of Maria Goeppert Mayer and her signature. Also included is part of a chart of the elements and isotopes with "magic numbers," from an article Mayer published in Scientific American in 1951; and a schematic diagram of nuclear shell levels, from Mayer and Jensen’s Elementary Theory of Nuclear Shell Structure. Marie Curie (born Maria Skłodowska, also known as Marie Curie-Skłodowska; November 7, 1867 – July 4, 1934) was a physicist and chemist of Polish upbringing and, subsequently, French citizenship. She was a pioneer in the field of radioactivity, the first twice-honored Nobel laureate (and still the only one in two different sciences) and the first female professor at the University of Paris. She was born in Warsaw, Congress Poland, Russian Empire, and lived there until she was 24. In 1891 she followed her elder sister to study in Paris, where she obtained her higher degrees and conducted her scientific work. She founded the Curie Institutes in Paris and Warsaw. She was the wife of fellow-Nobel-laureate Pierre Curie and the mother of a third Nobel laureate, Irène Joliot-Curie.
