  In 1961 the Robert Mosses power project opened and....."Put very simply, we divert water from the Niagara River—up to 375,000 gallons a second" During summer months this translates to about half of the original flow of water being diverted before it even reaches the falls, In winter months (off peak tourism) as little as one quarter of the original flow makes it's way over the falls.   Note the dual gauge track, the wider Provincial Gauge of the Great Western Railway of Canada, and the Standard 56.5 inch gauge of the American railways. Now almost all railways are four feet, eight and a half inches between the rails.
