Cornerstone laying 6/7/11; N.M. Butler; Seth Low (LOC)

Wystan said:
Photo bears date June 7, 1911, as does the cornerstone itself: www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/2163478442/in/p... The gentlemen identified by name are Nicholas Murray Butler, president of Columbia University, and Seth Low, former Columbia president and former Mayor of New York City, who in 1911 was chairman of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. The son of a wealthy China trader, Low had donated the Low Memorial Library to Columbia University, naming it for his father.

Wystan: Thanks for bringing our attention to the date on the negative, and for the more complete information about Butler and Low. We'll add these to the record next time we update.
Choracelo Gallery (LOC)

The Choralcelo (not Choracelo) was an electric keyboard musical instrument made by the Choralcelo Company, and apparently there was a studio or showroom "Choralcelo Galleries" in New York at 17 E. 40th Street. This photo may be of that studio. www.amica.org/Live/Publications/Past-Bulletin-Articles/Ch...

This may also be related to: "The New York Electrical Society held its 352d meeting on January 15th [1917] at the Choralcelo Galleries in New York Edward R Knowles lectured on "Dust Its Universality Its Conservatism and Its Elimination," giving some new and valuable data on the subject as well as indicating the part played by electricity in the most effective method of dust separation. After Mr Knowles' address, Guy P Norton spoke on the operative principles of the Choralcelo, the music of which is produced electrically, and a program of the music was rendered. Mr Norton explained how the various values were produced and modified and colored." Scientific American books.google.com/books?id=CbsxAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA97&lp... More in the Electrical Review: " Afterwards Mr Norton explained how the various tone values were created modified and colored, his talk being accompanied by many striking illustrations. The Choralcelo principle is based upon the discovery of a method of controlling the frequency of magnetic impulses and of synchronizing their attack with the natural and fundamental vibrations of sonorous bodies." books.google.com/books?id=TUROAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA106&l...
