Atlantic Ref. Co., rear station, service station plaza

THis is the Atlantic station that used to be at Southside Plaza, approximately where the McDonald's is today. The station faced and was close to Hull Street Road, and the rear of the station had the billboard as shown, which faced the parking lot for the shopping center.

Hmm. It's a lot different now! I'm guessing that where the open field is, is where the current A1 route travels?

The photographer is standing in what is now, the middle of the North end of the Southbound car park at Birtley services. Looking over Malley's Hole (an old pit) to Harraton Colliery on the left. The Magnesium Limestone Escarpment (A Heugh) at Heugh Hall (or what the new generation prefer to call Old Quarrington) sticks out like a sore thumb on the horizon.

As far as I know, the terminal shown here is incorporated into the present terminal, though you can't really tell it today.

That was back in the day when you could go out to the airport and stand at the fence and watch the planes land and take off. I remember taking our sons out there in the late 60's and early 70's.

what an awesome looking building! Why can't airport buildings look this simple and clean these days?
