Marian Irwin was born in Tokyo, the daughter of an American diplomat and his Japanese wife. She married her mentor, Winthrop John Vanleuven Osterhout (1871-1964), in 1933. (Maybe that's his shadow.) Winthrop became blind in 1934, and Marian was his personal as well as professional assistant for the next thirty years, until she was widowed.
