This is taken at the far eastern end of Byron Bay beach, a place known as The Pass - very popular with board riders, boaties and families [ not always a happy mix!]. There is now a wonderful viewing platform on top of the rocky outcrop, with about 74 steps! It is a great place from which to watch dolphins, but it is effectively cut off at high tide - unless you don't mind getting wet. I am sure [as is my husband] that the tide NEVER goes out that far anymore.

I've been to The Pass almost every year for the past ten and as to whether it is full of water or full of sand depends a lot on the tidal swirl in Byron Bay. Some years this area is denuded of sand and down to the bedrock (but there is heaps of sand at the other end of the bay), and some other years there is sand galore at the Pass but the middle/other end of the bay is being severely denuded of sand and even encroaching on the land. However, only in one year have I seen almost as much sand as that depicted.

"Burrell 8-nominal horespower single crank compound traction engine bought new about August 1901 by the Wyong sawmillers O'Neil and Goldsmith, from Burrells' Australian agent, at the time, of J. & C. Howard of 280 Pitt St., Sydney. The engine number remains a mystery at the moment. In the photo, on the left hand side is a large square piece of timber, writen on the end can be decifered "O'N & G" The location of the photo is Wyong railway station, before duplication of the railway line in 1912."

I hope that records.nsw has this captioned correctly. My memory is of something much smaller and less ornate. It could have been another to have space excised during its lifetime, but the whole station building wasn't large or grand. I had 'dinner' there once in the 1980s, towards the end of North Coast Mail: classic takeaway pie and coffee. Roderick B Smith Rail News Victoria Editor
