This photo ran in The Sunday Oregonian. (Portland, Ore.) on July 26, 1914 with the following story: "Harold Kantner, winner of aviation contract Harold Kantner, flying in a 50-horse-power Schmitt monoplane, won the aviation contest at New York on the Fourth. Kantner's time in the 36-mile race was 43 minutes 28 1-5 seconds. The only other birdman of the eight supposed to take part in the contest who actually flew was A. S. Heinrich, who was beaten by Kantner by 3 minutes 20 3-5 seconds. The race was arranged as part of the city's "safe and sane" celebration. This is the Maximilian Schmitt Military Tractor, converted from the Maximilian Schmitt Monoplane of 1914 for military trials at North Island, San Diego. The correct spelling is "Schmitt."
