What a nice scenery, but look how empty the place seems. What a contrast to the Market Place today. Sixty years later all of those proud buildings went up in smoke during that terrible and stupid war.

The Old Market Place -- Then and Now - 100+ years later
"This was the hub of the city's everyday activities and was first documented as early as 1290." The spires of the old and magnificent Stiftskirche (abbey church) are visible in both photographs.
"On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday mornings there is a market here. According to Stuttgart's centuries-old market rights, which are still valid today, only produce grown in Württemberg (or produce which might theoretically be grown there) may be sold - which excludes tropical fruits, for example.
"The buildings framing the current marketplace date from the 1950s and are typical of the functional architecture of the day. By varying the structures and colours of their façades to correspond with the original building plots, an attempt was made to give at least some idea of the width of the former medieval buildings in the rebuilding plans." —Stuttgart-tourist

All of it was bombed away in WWII - over 90% of the inner city was destroyed.

More about the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, and their belated recognition in 2009: edition.cnn.com/2009/US/02/25/postal.battalion/ They were "the first all-African-American, all-female unit to serve overseas in World War II."
