Archie Dunlop Lemon is shown as promoted from Temporary Second Lieutenant to Temporary Lieutenant in the Royal Irish Rifles wef 1 Feb 1915 [Sup of 8 May 1915 to London Gazette 29157 of 7 May 1915]. His address in the 1911 census, aged 36, is shown as a house at 38 Scotch Quarter, Carrickfergus Urban, where he was lodging as a boarder. 12th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles were the Central Antrim Volunteers. 2Lt Dunlop would have originally joined them while the Battalion was at Newtonards, still in basic training. 12 RIR moved to Seaford in Jul 1915 before going to France where they landed at Boulogne in Oct 1915. When 12 RIR left their trenches and lay down in no-mans land prior to the attack on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, Lt Archie Lemon was in 'B' Company commanding 6 Platoon, the left-most platoon in the battalion (alongside 9th Royal Irish Fusiliers), responsible for capturing 'Railway Sap'. Ireland Births & Baptisms on www.ancestry.co.uk show he was born 2 Apr 1875 at Castlereagh No 3, Down, Ireland. He was the son of Archibald Dunlop Lemon & Ellen Workman. National Probate records show him to be 'of Edgcumbe, Strandtown, Belfast'. Probate to Maria L Richardson, married woman; Ellen Lemon spinster and Edward Lemon, solicitor. Effects in England valued at £482 1s.

He was educated at Methody College, Belfast. Philip Orr's book Carrickfergus, Whitehead and the Great War (Carrickfergus Museum and Civic Centre, 2010, ISBN 978-0-9543478-3-3) says he was a factory manager for Barn Mills, on Taylor's Avenue (page 12). Page 26 gives a 5 verse song that no. 6 platoon sang, verse 3 is "Then comes Lieutenant Lemon, / A man who you all know, / Will lead the famous number 6 / No matter where they go". p. 32 gives an account of the attack where he was lost. I'm Steve Diamond, searching 4 him after seeing his name on the WWI plaque in Whitehead's Yacht Club, County Antrim.

In 1927, G.E. Adams, a cake manufacturer, acquired the titles for two lots (just over 61 perches) in Costin Street for the purposes of building a modern factory and offices. Two houses on the site were removed and an application for the construction of the factory approved by the Greater Brisbane City Council in 1926. The estimated cost of the building was £6 000 and the builders were A. Stonadge and Son. Sidney W. Prior designed the one storey brick building for Adams. The cake manufacturing firm of Adams Brothers was established in the southern states in the nineteenth century by G. E. Adams (Sydney) and C. Adams (Melbourne). By the early 1920s, G. E. Adams had formed his own company and established a manufacturing and retail presence in Brisbane. At this time, the firm operated a factory in Warry Street, Spring Hill. Adams expanded into central Queensland and spent £12 000 building new retail shops in Brisbane during the mid-1920s. The new factory in Costin Street was claimed to be “the most up-to-date and hygienic factory of its kind in Queensland” with electric revolving ovens, modern machinery and a modern freezing plant for the storage of ingredients. The factory produced 14 tons of cake each week. Within two years, the building had been extended and improvements added. By 1946, the additions running the length of the building on the eastern and western sides had been built. The factory at Costin Street remained in the ownership of G.E. Adams until 1968. It changed hands several times before it was acquired by Ann and Harry Garms in 1989.
