Van der Werff was the mayor of Leyden during the siege in 1573-1574. The park could be created because a powder ship exploded in 1807, devastating a large area of the city.

The gable is the longest Renaissance gable in the Netherlands, the architect was Lieven de Key. Unfortunately the City Hall burnt down In 1929, only the gable was left standing. They built a new City Hall, but used the old gable.
