I think this is the same photo in the New York Tribune, 9-18-21, with the caption:
"ON THE AUCTION BLOCK.
The first auction sale of a man to take place in this country since
the Civil War is held on historic Boston Common, when Jim Ferris, a twenty-three-year-old veteran of the World War, jobless, broke and hungry, is put up by Urbain Ledoux, the noted charity worker. Ferris was willing to work for the highest bidder, but failed to draw a single bid."

Not a hotel room -- this was a gym where boxers trained. A November 24, 1913, photo of boxer Charles Morris shows another chamber in this suite, with the identical wallpaper: @undeadsinatra: In the 19th century, a cult of the Apache was active in the French underworld, especially in Paris. They took their name from the Apache Indians of North America, and were famous for their costumes, wearing flashy shirts with horizontal stripes.
