"The name of the mountain was formerly spelled "Mount Kosciusko," an Anglicisation; but the version "Mount Kosciuszko" was officially adopted in 1997 by the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales." --Wikipedia Size Does Matter! "Various measurements of the peak originally called by that name showed it to be slightly lower than its neighbour, Mount Townsend, and the names were thereupon transposed by the New South Wales Lands Department, so that Mount Kosciuszko still remains the name of the highest peak of Australia, and Mount Townsend ranks as second." -- Year Book Australia, 1910

This is the drift to the south and east of Mt Kosciuszko. The drift persists into summer longer than almost all other drifts in the mountains. After a winter of particularly heavy snowfall there are remnants of this drift that persist through to the next winter, although this is becoming increasingly rare. Australia does not have any permanent snowpack. Lake Cootapatamba is out of shot to the right and the summit of the mountain is a little beyond the top lefthand corner. Cootapatamba is a glacial tarn, and is the highest lake in Australia. The summit, the highest point in inhabited Australia (there is a higher peak called Big Ben on Heard Island, an Australian territory) is only 2,228 metres ASL. The land is low and eroded. The Main Range is in the distance.

Of the recent additions this photo really caught my eye, and I thought it was a shame about the crack and missing piece. After spending a bit more time than I should have (ninety minutes) I managed to clean it up and recreate the missing bit. It's by no means a professional job, but then that's what I was paid for. ;) Happy to know what people think too! If there's anybody else crazy enough to spend time repairing these photos we ought to start a group for repairing these.
