Is it a collection box for the sick and poor of the parish. If it was a post box it would have the reigning monarchs (when commissioned) emblem.

Description: From Bradley and King (1985, 1, 80-1) Located on the S wall of the church tower, but originally within the church according to Dopping’s Visitation (1682-5) (Ellison 1973, 7). It consists of two rectangular limestone tablets (Wth 1.46m (approx. H 0.44m) with an incised inscription in mixed gothic and roman lettering:
The bodie of this churche being i utter ruyn and decaie was reedi /fied i ano dni 1579 & in ano R. R. Elizabeth XX through the dilig / ce and care of the revered father i god Hughe Brady Byshop of Meat/ he & Sir Thoe Garvie archedeacon of the same and Deane of Christchurch/ i Dubline bothe of here maiestie is privie consaile Sr hereie sionie/Knight of the noble ordire being then Lord Deputie &c. The said reedifying was begane & seatt forward be the advise & daly / carfull travaell of the ancient burgis Nicholas O…./ then being suffranie of Kinllis 2 of Iuli I Ao. Proicto / with other daly furtherins boght the rowff of this / c… uppo his owin proper chargis. God is not unright / at he shuld forget the worke and labour that proced I / which love is shewed for his name is sake. -
