Thomas B. Denegre of New Orleans (Yale 1915) owned a rather famous yacht, the Helen (later the Lavengro), from 1926-1944. The schooner was lent to the US Coast Guard at Biloxi during WWII. In recent years (2010) it was restored and is still sailing in the Seattle area. schoonerlavengro.org/history.html

Captain of the Yale crew in 1914, but didn't race in the first boat against Harvard. See NYT of June 20, 1914. He was re-elected captain for the next year. query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9D0CE4DA133EE733A... Picture in Yale Archives at images.library.yale.edu/madid/oneItem.aspx?id=1771127

Thank you all for providing the full name. We'll fill in the caption and add the date next time we update the record. And thanks to you, swanq for the link to the photo from the Yale archives, a very handsome young man.

Boy, he looks like quite the party animal.
  • Barbara (LOC P&P) said:
Richard Allen Norton: Thanks for pointing out Nickalls' connection to the Yale University crew. And thanks, Wystan, for highlighting the date on the negative. It appears, from an article in the New-York Tribune for June 14, 1914 that I found online through Chronicling America, that Yale was gearing up to face Harvard in June of that year: chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83030214/1914-06-14/ed-... . We'll add information when we next update the description.

Richard Arthur Norton: Thanks for identifying him - it looks as though one "n" was missed in the identification on the negative, though both "n's" made it onto a portrait of him, also in the Bain Collection, where you also identified him: www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/5169002565/ . We'll adjust the description when we next update.
