These great old photos should also be in the Picture Australia pool.

Another wonderful picture of the not-so-good old days. Dated "August 1901" - it was just after an outbreak of bubonic plague in the Rocks. The whole area was resumed by the NSW government for slum clearance. Maybe these photos were taken for evidence? The next photo is from the other end of the street, possibly at the same time.

RAT'S @RSE ! Thanks lifeasdaddy for those charming pictures - put me off my breakfast. It is fun to see what were once considered to be complete slums, are now referred to as a 'renovator's delight'.

Good find. Do you know what date the Ashton painting was done? It appears to be after the phtograph, as the major house in the photograph is in ruins or demolished in the painting and the tree near the bend in the road at left is much larger in the painting.

I think the photo was part of the series taken in 1901 after the bubonic plague. So presumably the Ashton painting is soon after demolition. It seems the unnamed photographer and Ashton might have known each other, just as with this photo - www.flickr.com/photos/powerhouse_museum/2844602875/ . I am keeping an eye out for other matches.

There are chooks wandering around in the Ashton painting too.

Apart from the history (this picturesque corner of Millers Point was demolished to make way for Hickson Road), this is a wonderful photo with amazing composition, curves and perspectives. How to make old 'slums' look beautiful . John Degotardi Jnr photographer?
