This is the earliest photo I can remember seeing where there is padding on the wall, even if it is the bull pen. www.baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=henryjo02

After searching for John P. Henry, I found his wikipedia article. He played catcher for the Washington Senators, shown here in this photo, wearing the jersey with the "W" on his sleeve. This must be a picture of him warming up a pitcher before a game.

It is great to baseball in the collection of the Library of Congress. It is the pride and joy of the American way (even back in 1914!), and will continue to be for years.

This photo was taken at Griffith Stadium, as evidenced by Washington's whites and, more conclusively, by this photo, presumably showing Henry in the background:

Someone goofed up. You are right. It's Griffith Stadium. These are great photos, though. That is a fantastic catcher's mitt considering this was 1914. It looks like you could actually close that mitt a bit as it has webbing. I have one from the late forties that is so thick and basically no webbing that I don't see how anyone could catch pitches not thown down the pipe.

What a great photo!! Look how far the hitter is choking up on the bat... I also can't stop looking at the support columns for the upper deck. I don't know; they don't look too solid to me. LOL!

But why is he playing at the Polo Grounds? The NY AL franchise didn't start having their games there until 1914. Could the photo have been misdated?
