I was scrolling through the photos under the Library of Congress, and none of them really had me stop and double-take until I saw this one! I totally agree with the comment above in that this is one of the creepiest people I have ever seen, but beyond that, this picture is ghastly! It looks like the man and the entire room itself is covered with ghosts.

This man seems like he has been possessed by some spirit. Just look at his eyes. They look so scary! The main question that I have to ask is why one hand is in the air for no reason. He doesn't even have anything in his hand! Why is he holding it up?

rockcreek: Thanks for the identification. Comparing it to another photo in our collections ( hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/cph.3b43051 ), it does appear to be James Hazen Hyde. We'll fill out his name in the source description and reload it to Flickr.
