I'd riot too if someone upped all the food prices... We've added your photo to our favorites and to our photo collection related to food prices.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperinflation_in_the_Weimar_Republic Since there have not been any postings in a month, are we still in 1923 or are we in 1924.

The date written on the negative (at bottom left) is 10/27/23. So the photo was taken no later than October 27, 1923. See also alphahistory.com/weimarrepublic/1923-hyperinflation/

The banknotes on the right are Thousand Mark notes introduced September 15, 1923: www.apcpapercollect.com/images/1germP076b1000mark.jpg By late October, when this image was taken, 1000 Marks couldn't even buy you a cup of coffee. On Oct. 25, 1923, 1 U.S. $ was worth 1,000,000,000,000 Mark (1 trillion Marks). These banknotes are stacked in the basement of the bank because they are literally not worth the paper on which they are printed. www.pbs.org/wgbh/commandingheights/shared/minitext/ess_ge...

The John Wanamaker store in Philadelphia (now Macy's). Photo appears to have been taken looking Northeast towards the Delaware River.

Clearly not a hot-air balloon - hydrogen perhaps?

Looks like Wanamaker liked "firsts" www.wanamakerorgan.com/facts.html so one wonders what sort of "first" this might have been.

Wanamaker is properly spelled with only one "n." This is the roof of the Wanamaker store in New York City, where the balloon was tethered for several days while it was filled with hydrogen gas made on the spot by pouring sulphuric acid over iron filings. It was planned that the balloon would be launched and steered toward Philadelphia, but the pilot got lost in fog and landed in West Nyack instead. Here's the story from the New York Times, July 9, 1911: query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9506E0D71431E233A... Another Bain/LOC photo of the Wanamaker balloon:
