I learned to skate on these friese doorlopers in the winter of 1950-51. The were light, and low enough to the surface of the ice for the young skater not to wobble, lose balance and fall. I noticed that as people had more disposible money, in the 70s, young children were given relatively expensive kunstschaatsen, the kind used in figure-skating competitions, with blades permanently attached to white leather boots. Although they looked good, I always thought that it was much more difficult for younger children to learn how to skate well (glide smoothly with long strokes) in those.

i learned to skate on doorlopers too, and these were given to me in the 1970s by my parents. From my grandmother i learned a failsafe way to tie them so that they didn't get loose.
