"Charlotte Oelschlägel, aka Charlotte Hayward (August 14, 1898 in Berlin - November 14, 1984 in Berlin) was a German professional skater. For most of her life, she used only her first name as her stage name. She invented the death spiral and the charlotte spiral, named after her." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte_Oelschlagel Another photos of her is in The Day book., February 17, 1917, LAST EDITION, Image 27. She appeared in the ice show Hip-Hip-Hooray! at the New York Hippodrome. See also The Day book., January 16, 1917, LAST EDITION, Image 13.

The sheet music in the photo leads to a hit musical extravaganza, "Hip Hip Hooray" which played at New York's 5,200 seat Hippodrome Theatre between 9/30/15 and 6/3/16. A performer named only Charlotte (Oelschlägel) is depicted ice skating on the cover, and mention of her skating is made in this New York Times article from May 2, 1916. query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F10D17F93D5F13738... The story of 17 year old Charlotte's rise to stardom in the production, as well as photos of the ice-skating extravaganza in Hip Hip Hooray is told and illustrated (in part by a full color reproduction of the sheet music in this picture) on a page devoted to her at icestagearchive.com. www.icestagearchive.com/images/scan0004.jpg www.icestagearchive.com/charlotte.html A 1926 biographical sketch select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F10716F73E5D1373... "St Patrick’s Day has always been the day for the Irish in Australia. On 17 March 1795 there were rowdy festivities among the Irish convicts, and the cells were filled with prisoners. Later the occasion gained in respectability, marked by formal dinners attended by the colonial elite, many with no Irish connections."
