Its October according to the info above not summer. The month of October would be a slack time for ag workers in 1939 since the cotton crop would be slowly maturing without the plant steroids we have today. Its also the time of least rainfall. Cotton picking done by hand would start in the next month or so, I believe. The creek could be Wasp Lake which is an ancient Yazoo River channel. Or perhaps Afchafalya Bayou.
