You can see the shadow of the photographer and his camera.

At least the presence of the photographer exists in shadow, quite clearly, with camera and tripod. Excellent image to share!

Delightful. To see more detail - take this picture into Photoshop and perform "auto Levels". More sophisticated enhancements yield even more but this one's so simple. (But less authentic ... I know.)

Here is Circular Quay in 1892 - Spot The Differences - PhM

This one is slightly earlier than 1892 - they are building the Manly and Watsons Bay wharves -

Thanks Beachcomber, a new fence, some different horses, some spooky moving people... I think between construction of the Manly wharf and the finer details (like the fence along the water) that this is 1891, an article in the SMH of December 1891 mentions the 'new Manly wharf' at the foot of Phillip St. Looking over notes from the original negative, the vessel moored closest to front IS TORRIDON - which I see you already suggested!

Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons Aha! The shadows are comparatively short with the sun in the west, implying a summer afternoon - whereas the PhM 1892 photo shadows are longer implying winter. The TORRIDON arrived in Sydney 23/11/1891 - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13856766 Departed 14/2/1892 - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13855859 Loaded and cleared with "8006 bales of wool and rough cargo" ... "in great order and trim" ... "Captain [Andrew] Mearns in command" ... - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13862139 I reckon due to the shadows and shipping dates, and the new Manly wharf, January / February 1892. Now to work out which Orient liner that is ...

More info about the TORRIDON's cargo in February 1892, just for interest - "The ship Torridon also cleared at the Customs to-day for London with 8006 bales of wool, 3207 ingots dross, 2075 bags zinc ashes, 600 bags copper ore, 105 tons alumite." from - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13862175
