The street really widens here.

Pre 1899 (no tram lines). Post 1885 - see iron arcade holding and hiding telephone cables on west / right side of George Street. (ref.- www.telephonecollecting.org/lightpoles.htm )

They must have thought this was colossal for it's time... this pre-dates any real notion of a train network surely?

Highranger It was! In fact the Sydney Railway Company, precursor to the Government operations which surplanted the company was advocating moving the central railway station of the first line closer to the heart of the city as early as 1849. Here is a map of the first planned extension

What a SPECTACULAR building! And look! No cars on the streets at all!! WHY?!? Shame it had to go, I guess. I never even got to visit it :(

Now World Square

Was used by NSW Institute of Technology (now UTS) for business and law school from 1967-1984. in the end It leaked in some of the classrooms when it rained, and had non-functioning lifts in the middle of the staircase. Still good memories of the Brickfield Hill building though.
