I was wrong. The ship is surely HMAS Anzac (the second funnel isn't seen). And this photo is "mirrored" (look at the steam pipes).

beachcomber australia Yes we think so, a few journalists reporting on the day appear to have been reporting from ANZAC: nla.gov.au/nla.news-article16733206 Rear-Admiral E R G R Evans was overseeing the operation from ANZAC and transmitting orders to ALBATROSS and CANBERRA. Can you imagine the atmosphere? There would have been explosions and quite a rumble with the explosives being set off and the guns being fired.

It was November 24, 1930 and the ship in the background is HMAS Canberra, which will sink Torrens as target practice [i.e., she is not being scuttled].

I am looking for shots fo the HMAS Sydney (and other old naval vessels) after being shown this shot... My great grandfather is onboard, I am amazed at the size of ship but also the quality of photography back then!
