    It was November 24, 1930 and the ship in the background is HMAS Canberra, which will sink Torrens as target practice [i.e., she is not being scuttled].

    I am looking for shots fo the HMAS Sydney (and other old naval vessels) after being shown this shot... My great grandfather is onboard, I am amazed at the size of ship but also the quality of photography back then!

    In fact this is HMAS Albatross, probably the most unusual warship ever built in Australia. It was designed as a seaplane carrier and built at Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour in 1928. It could carry nine seaplanes but in service handled only six, which were lifted off and onto the ship by a large crane. In 1936 a catapult was fitted but was probably never used, as soon thereafter the ship was sent to England as part-payment for a more useful Royal Navy cruiser which was renamed "HMAS Hobart". Albatross served with honour and some damage during WW2 and was then laid up, only to be sold in 1947. It was renamed "Pride of Torquay" and rebuilt to carry refugees and migrants as the "Hellenic Prince" - back to Australia. This rather ungainly but colourful ship was dismantled in 1954.

    Wonderful photo. The ship in the background is the [unique] seaplane carrier HMAS Albatross, a vessel built at Cockatoo Island Dockyard, laid down in April 1926, launched by Lady Stonehaven, wife of the Governor General and commissioned on January 23, 1929. Known as 'Australia's first aircraft carrier' she was also armed with four 4.7 inch guns, which are what would been being used for the target practice here. Further details of this ship are widely available, and ANMM will have them in your own records. With her RAN service affected by the Great Depression, she was transferred to the Royal Navy as part-payment for the cruiser HMAS Hobart [ex-HMS Apollo] in 1938, and had a significant career with the Royal Navy during WWII. Became the migrant ship Hellenic Prince after WWII, and finally scrapped at Hong Kong in 1954.
