    This is the Great Southern & Western inspection car. It was travelling out the Valentia line as it had just been opened, as noted in 1893. The cutting and soil as you can see is still fresh from the construction.

    Drung hill was a notable section on this line in having 3 short tunnels in quick succession sitting high on a narrow ledge 270ft over the south shore of Dingle bay and just above the road to Cahirciveen. The line was built under the Light Railway Act of 1889, but it could hardly be called so as it’s costly building (£8,800 a mile) required many sections of heavy engineering, like around distant Drung Hill above. Ironically this part of the line mirrored the northern part of the famous "Ring of Kerry tourist route which gets clogged with large slow moving buses in high season, the railway closing in 1960 just before the age of mass transatlantic tourist travel that might have helped prolonged it's potential.     I can't get very close in Google street view, this is the best I can do. Just left of the red car is the bridge over the railway visible in the original, and the same house can be seen too. The railway is, of course, gone. Wikipedia suggests that the last train ran in 1953.
