Private Arnold Atkins

    Arnold Atkins Born 24th June 1894 Yeadon near Leeds, West Yorks. Second child of Samuel Atkins [b.1868 Gledston, Norfolk] a Woollen Worker, and Lois Atkins nee Exley [b.1869 Yeadon, West Yorks.] The 1901 census records him living at 13 Walker Row, Yeadon, West Yorks. with his parents and siblings; Ivy [b.1893 Yeadon], Eva [b.1899 Yeadon] and William [b.1900 Yeadon]. The family also has a lodger living with them. The1911 census records him still living with his parents but now at 6 Dobroyd New Mill, Yeadon. The census records another sister, born since the last census, Lydia [b.1905 Yeadon]. Also living with family is his [now married] older sister’s husband and a lodger. Arnold is employed as a Woollen Weaver Pte. 201733 Arnold Atkins’ Attestation Papers have not survived so it is unclear where he joined up or how he came to be in the Seaforth Highlanders. Killed on 26th July 1916 he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
